Mufasa: The Lion King won the first US Box Office of 2025: the Disney film prevailed against a fierce Sonic 3. After two weeks of domination, the third film dedicated to the fastest alien hedgehog on the big screen left the first position at the North American box office, but not without a fight; picking up the scepter, as anticipated at the beginning, was that Musafa considered by many to be a flop after its debut with the handbrake on.
According to the data provided by BoxOfficePro, in fact, Musafa: The Lion King grossed an estimated $23.83 million in the first weekend of 2025, with a minimal drop of around 35%, and an increasingly convincing total of $168.6 million. The gap with the $191.7 million collected in 2019 by The Lion King in the same period is still huge. Still, certainly, the excellent word of mouth is contributing to Musafa's slow recovery. Internationally, the weekend's takings brought another $53.5 million to Disney's coffers, for a worldwide total of $476.4 million.
Sonic 3 lost the lead after two weekends of dominance, but it certainly can't be considered unhappy given that second place earned $21.2 million, for a total of $187.5 million in three weeks of programming. Globally, the film reached $336.3 million, more than the first film's $302 million. With this weekend's takings, the Paramount franchise has surpassed $1 billion in takings (1.043 billion to be precise).
Nosferatu once again confirmed its third place; the horror film grossed $13.2 million, for a total of $69.4 million, well above the most optimistic forecasts of analysts and studios. Oceania 2 collected another $12.39 million (total of $425.15 million) in fourth place, while Wicked grossed $10.2 million (total of $450.75 million) in fifth. As a final consideration, Gladiator 2 is on the verge of surpassing the global gross of its predecessor: to date, it has reached $449.6 million against the first's $451.6 million.
