Attack on Titan is preparing to return to the cinema with Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK, the last chance to find the beloved characters created by Hajime Isayama on the big screen. The manga and anime, among the most popular of the last decade, tell the story of a boy named Eren Yeager, who together with his friends Mikasa and Armin enlists in the Survey Corps to defeat and kill the Titans, enormous beings that devour men. More than the main trio, however, it is another character of Isayama who has become the absolute favorite of his readers: Captain Levi Ackerman.

Levi stands out among all the other characters both for his incredible strength against the enemy, and for his seemingly mysterious and grumpy personality, but in reality determined and reliable. In a 2014 interview with Mangabrog, the Attack on Titan author revealed that he created his design almost by accident, while idly sketching on a sheet of paper. His main inspiration was the character Rorschach from Watchmen, from which he drew the intensity and complexity.

When an anime character becomes super popular, the fandom tends to dedicate fan art, fan fiction, and original creations to them. Among them, especially in Japanese entertainment, the Yaoi phenomenon is famous, where fans enjoy imagining homosexual relationships between their favorite characters. It goes without saying that Levi is a favorite subject for this type of creation, but Isayama, for his part, is not at all displeased. In fact, the mangaka surprisingly revealed that he created Levi with this type of audience in mind!

"Fans may be sad to hear this, but I think I have a little Yaoi fangirl inside me," the author joked, "because when I created Levi, a light bulb went off and I thought, 'Girls who love Yaoi will love this.' My goal was to create a character similar to Hiei from Yu of the Ghosts [a shonen manga by Yoshihiro Togashi, ed.], and when I finished the design, I knew I had hit the mark." What do you think of this curious backstory about Levi? In the meantime, we remind you that the last Attack on Titan film will be in theaters exclusively on March 3, 4, and 5, 2025, distributed by Eagle Pictures for Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
