Willem Dafoe is a great actor who has played various roles in his long career, such as Platoon (1986), The Man from Nowhere (1999), and The Florida Project (2017). One of the most representative roles in his filmography is the Green Goblin in the Spider-Man series. When he first appeared in Spider-Man (2002), starring Tobey Maguire and directed by Sam Raimi, he made a strong impact not only on comic book fans but also on general audiences and made a symbolic cameo appearance in the second and third films. Even after the completion of the trilogy, he has become a character that is still talked about as "Spider-Man's nemesis."
In 2021, Dafoe reprised the character in Spider-Man: No Way Home, starring Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In an interview with the British magazine Empire looking back on his career and life, he recalled, "I was just happy to be able to return to that role." "Just like the original (Spider-Man), I like how it goes from comedy to drama to action in one scene. There were a lot of twists and turns, and I was playing two roles. Everyone focuses on the Green Goblin, but that one is mostly action. I like acting, and I think I can do it beautifully, but the essence of the first movie was Norman Osborn without the mask. That's more important."
Going back to his first appearance in Spider-Man, Dafoe asserts that "the essence of the Green Goblin is Norman Osborn." That's why he didn't care about the criticism of the Green Goblin's mask at the time. "Because I'm playing the role of Norman." This comment is also in line with what he said about the criticism of the mask, "I don't think I act with my face," and "The fact that my face shows my heart is just an expression of my feelings." Regarding his decision to reprise the role in "No Way Home," Dafoe revealed that he focused on the character of Norman. "It was important that it was unclear where the revived Green Goblin began and where Norman began. That was the point of the play."
Incidentally, Dafoe previously commented on the possibility of reprising the role, "If everything goes well, of course." With Tom Holland's version of "Spider-Man 4 (working title)" currently in the planning stages, and with the endless possibilities of the MCU, is it possible that the Green Goblin will return someday...?
