The “Christmas PG Challenge” at the top of the box office characterized the last three days of cinema in the North American territory. Sonic 3 had the lion's share (excuse the pun) compared to the Disney giant “Mufasa: The Lion King“. According to data provided by The Hollywood Reporter, in fact, the third chapter of the famous video game saga debuted with a sumptuous 62 million dollars, well above the pre-release estimates released by analysts. Data in hand, the result obtained by Sonic 3 is the highest ever for a “PG” released in December since “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, in 2005.
Jeff Fowler’s film, among other things, was accompanied in theaters by the approval of critics (on Rotten Tomatoes it has a score of 88%), but also – and above all – of the public (“98%” on Popcornmeter, “A” CinemaScore). The impression is that the Christmas holidays will offer a significant multiplier. As anticipated, Mufasa: The Lion King was defeated in this challenge with Sonic 3, but it will certainly have time and opportunity to make up for it during the long period of the Christmas holidays. The collection obtained over the weekend was 35 million dollars, well below analysts’ expectations.
The clash with the first chapter is to be considered merciless given that the debut weekend of The Lion King was 191 million dollars. It didn't go better internationally, where the debut was 87.2 million (at least 125 million were expected). Critics were not docile towards the new Disney film, in fact on Rotten Tomatoes the score was 56% (the first chapter collected 51% in 2019), while the public seemed quite satisfied with the final result ("A-" on CinemaScore and "88%" on PopCornMeter). In the rest of the US Box Office, both Wicked and Oceania 2 held up well.
