It has been revealed that director Christopher Nolan's latest work will be The Odyssey, a film adaptation of the ancient Greek epic poem of the same name. Universal Pictures has officially announced the production. The original The Odyssey is a heroic epic poem by the poet Homer and tells the story of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who embarks on a dangerous journey to his hometown after the Trojan War. Odysseus continues his adventure, meeting gods such as Zeus and Athena, the sea god Poseidon, and the Sirens, but he is thought to be dead in Ithaca, and many suitors flock to his wife, Penelope...
According to Universal Pictures, this work is "a mythical action epic filmed all over the world using the new technology of IMAX film." Homer's story will be filmed on the big screen of IMAX for the first time in history. As previously reported, the US release date is July 17, 2026. The cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, and Robert Pattinson. The roles of each cast member have not yet been revealed. Nolan will write the screenplay himself, and Emma Thomas will produce.
Nolan has taken up historical subjects in Oppenheimer (2023) and The Prestige (2006), but this is the first time he has gone back to ancient Greece. In The Dark Knight trilogy, he tried to adapt comic books into films, but this is his first attempt to tackle mythological elements (fantasy elements) such as gods and monsters head-on, and it is expected to be a new frontier in his career. However, in 2019, it was revealed that Nolan had been planning a film adaptation of the Trojan War under Warner Bros. after Insomnia (2002). At the time, Nolan's ability to make a major film was not yet guaranteed, so Warner Bros. entrusted director Wolfgang Petersen with the production of Troy (2004).
Instead, plans for Batman Begins (2004) began to move forward. The film was produced and distributed by Universal Pictures, which produced Oppenheimer. This was their second collaboration, and it could be said that this was revenge for a project that had not been realized in the past. The Martian has previously been adapted into a film, such as Ulysses (1954) starring Kirk Douglas, and The Martian (1997), which was executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola. The Coen brothers' O. Henry! (2000) and Cold Mountain (2003) are also known to be based on the same work. The Odyssey is scheduled for release in the US on July 17, 2026. Filming will begin in early 2025.
