If you think that your roommate is "just" a person with whom you share expenses and moments of daily life, this Netflix series will make you change your perspective: Worst Roommate Ever has shocked viewers since its release, making them reflect on how much we really know those who live under the same roof as us.

The disturbing true crime anthology show, released on Netflix on February 1, 2022, explores in-depth real stories of people who have lived traumatic experiences with their roommates. Each episode tells a different story, centered on "housemates" who, initially considered harmless or innocent, turned out to be criminals or dangerous. It not only focuses on the experiences of people who have been victims of scams or assaults but also on the psychological nuances of those who, for obscure reasons, have been hosted in the homes of others with the intent of exploiting them or even worsening their lives.

One of the most disturbing cases explored in the series is that of Dorothea Puente, who, in the 1980s, earned the nickname "landlady of death". The woman welcomed elderly or disabled people into her Sacramento boarding house, promising them a place to live in exchange for managing their social benefits. However, behind this apparent facade of goodness hid a real killer: after manipulating her guests, Dorothea killed them and buried their bodies in the garden of her house. The macabre plan then came to light when a man mysteriously disappeared and the investigation led to the macabre discovery of seven bodies buried under her property. Puente was eventually arrested, tried, and convicted of murder, although her guilt remained controversial until she died in prison in 2011.

Then there is the story of Maribel Ramos, an Iraq war veteran who mysteriously disappeared in 2013 after starting a relationship with a man named KC Joy. The series reveals how Joy’s suspicious behavior during the investigation led to a series of disturbing online searches, including those about the decomposition of bodies. The discovery of Maribel’s body in a nearby canyon led to the hypothesis of murder, and subsequent analysis of his conversations revealed that Joy had developed a romantic obsession with the woman. When he was arrested, he confessed to killing Maribel after an escalation of tension and emotional disappointment, but his motives remain a mystery. Joy was later convicted of her murder, and although he showed signs of remorse, a life sentence never erased the tragedy he had wrought.

Among the other shocking cases is that of Jamison Bachman, a squatter who terrorized his roommates in Philadelphia. The man moved into a house under a false identity and, after refusing to pay the rent, began to become increasingly violent. The series highlights his manipulative nature, which led him to exploit the kindness of his roommates to earn a place to live without any intention of contributing. When one of his roommates, Alex Miller, tried to evict him, Bachman reacted extremely violently, physically attacking him. The series also reveals how the man, once evicted, brutally killed Miller's brother before being arrested. A tragic example that the series takes as emblematic of the dangers of people who infiltrate the lives of others without scruples and with a dark agenda.

In short, Worst Roommate Ever is a powerful warning about the dangers that can hide behind the front door. Do you know this Netflix series? Let us know in the comments!
