What a year for Prime Video! The platform has in fact been the protagonist of some excellent debuts, such as when in spring it conquered millions of viewers around the world thanks to the remake of Road House and the series on the video game Fallout (winner at the Game Awards in the adaptations category). Now, however, it's time to update the rankings, because there's a new record to set.
After not doing particularly well at the cinema, in fact, Red One is making its voice heard on streaming. The Christmas action starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, according to what was reported in these hours by the platform, has totaled 50 million views around the world in just 4 days, thus becoming the most viewed Amazon MGM Studios film to debut on streaming. In April, the remake with Jake Gyllenhaal had also recorded the same numbers, but they had been reported over two weeks. With Christmas just around the corner, a title like Red One could likely increase its viewership even further and completely destroy the record it already had.
Costing $250 million, it has collected a total of $175 million at the box office worldwide. Amazon MGM, however, has always said that box office results are not important to their business model: “If we can release these films in theaters and cover our advertising costs, why not? We will have a massive marketing campaign that will pay off before the film hits streaming,” said head of theatrical distribution Kevin Wilson.
“Given the response to Red One both in theaters and on Prime Video, the film is clearly going to be a perennial holiday favorite for years to come,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, about the film’s streaming debut. With Red One, there was no question that the strategy needed to include a theatrical release and accompanying marketing campaign, which drove audiences to theaters and generated awareness for the film among viewers who would eventually tune in to Prime Video. It’s gratifying to see our plan pay off for customers, and we’re incredibly grateful to the entire filmmaking team and cast who helped bring it to life.”
