Last October, 14 years after the beginning of the saga, The Walking Dead apparently introduced the first character immune to the zombie virus thanks to the series The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
In the spin-off, in fact, Daryl meets a boy named Laurent, who immediately shows that he has several special characteristics. In addition to being extremely intelligent and wise for his age, he also seems to have superpowers, including the ability to predict the future (for example, he had made a drawing depicting Daryl before even meeting him). But above all, Laurent is at the center of a phantom prophecy: according to Isabelle, a Buddhist monk predicted that he would be the one to save humanity and lead it to rebirth. For this reason, the religious group of the Union community is convinced that he is a true Messiah.
But why does the series give so much importance to this character? The answer is in the following episodes, where it is implied that his status as a mystical and religious figure is due to his supposed immunity to the virus. A flashback by Isabelle reveals that Laurent is her sister Lily's son and that she knows the details of his birth. While she and her sister were fleeing Paris, Lily was attacked and bitten by a zombie, transforming herself. But unexpectedly, despite being pregnant, the child was born perfectly human. This scenario is completely new to The Walking Dead, and to date, the spin-off has not yet explored the possible consequences.
Is Laurent really immune? Having been born to a woman transformed into a zombie, the virus could have become part of him and therefore he could represent the key to a possible cure. This implication could completely change the course of the series: up to this point, the protagonists of The Walking Dead have focused on escaping or fighting the threat, but the discovery of a possible vaccine could open the doors to the real end of the zombie apocalypse.
At the moment, however, the question of the true nature of the boy remains unanswered. There are several clues that seem to suggest that his immunity is real, but also just as many that prove that it is just a vain hope of the community, such as the fact that the zombies attack him calmly, not recognizing in any way his diversity. Certainly, it is one of the storylines that the series will absolutely have to resolve before proceeding towards the grand finale.
