Director Matt Reeves has revealed that planning for The Penguin season 2 is already underway, as confirmed in a Wednesday interview by Variety. During the conversation, Reeves and Zoë Kravitz discussed The Batman sequel and related projects. While negotiations for a second season are ongoing, Reeves stressed that there is no guarantee it will happen yet. When asked about The Batman: Part II updates, Reeves said, “We’re finishing the script. We’re shooting next year.” Kravitz took the opportunity to ask about other TV spinoffs, highlighting the success of The Penguin.

Reeves responded, “Yes, we’re talking to [showrunner Lauren LeFranc] about doing another season. It’s been a special experience. I feel really lucky. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It’s about finding an approach that allows you to express something personal through them.” The Penguin was originally conceived as a miniseries for HBO, building on the success of Reeves’ 2022 The Batman. The film emphasized the “world’s greatest detective” aspect of Batman (played by Robert Pattinson), making it a natural fit to further explore Gotham’s organized crime and corruption, including Oswald Cobblepot, aka “The Penguin.”

Played by Colin Farrell, this version of Cobblepot had a supporting role in the film but became the protagonist in the eight-episode series. The idea of a second season has so far been floated primarily by Reeves and fans. Although it was conceived as a miniseries, the show has been warmly received, with Reeves telling The Hollywood Reporter that a second season is “on the table.” However, Farrell has been less enthusiastic about a return to Gotham. The actor admitted that playing the character took him to a dark emotional place and that the process of donning the heavy prosthetics was extremely taxing. “I never want to wear that f**king suit and that f**king head again,” he said.

Despite this, Farrell has signed on to return for The Batman: Part II, while Reeves has also agreed to direct a third installment in the saga. The sequel will see the return of Robert Pattinson as Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. As for Zoë Kravitz, who played Selina Kyle aka Catwoman, there is no confirmation on her return, and the interview did not give the impression that she and Reeves have actually discussed the possibility.
