The fifth season of Stranger Things promises to surprise fans once again with unexpected twists and returns that defy all logic. The title of the series, now synonymous with mysteries and parallel realities, seems ready to play with one of its most fascinating elements: the possibility that what seems definitive is not at all. And this time, the focus is all on a character who, at least on paper, should no longer be among us. But in the Hawkins universe, as we know, rules are made to be broken. The Netflix series has always incorporated supernatural elements, starting with the mysterious alternate dimension known as the Upside Down, from which Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) communicates with his mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder).

Although the boy is not actually dead, Stranger Things later introduces characters who seem to return from the afterlife. One of those is Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine), the sinister figure behind the experiments on psychic individuals like Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Vecna, aka Henry Creel (Jamie Campbell Bower). Despite his apparent death in season 1, Brenner’s return in season 4 has raised questions about his fate. In an interview, Modine himself suggested that Brenner may have secret survival skills, citing key death-defying moments like his encounter with the Demogorgon and his ability to destroy Eleven’s powers.

The actor said, “I wouldn’t want him to be dead. Three things intrigue me: How did she survive the Demogorgon? How did she survive One? And when Eleven tries to use her power against Dr. Brenner, after sending three guards flying, he pushes it away without batting an eyelid and says, ‘You didn’t think it was that easy, did you?’ She couldn’t get it to work on him. Is there more to Brenner than we think?” To add to the mystery, Modine posted a video to Instagram on November 27, showing himself sitting in a makeup chair and wearing prosthetics, along with the hashtags #strangerthings5 and #drmartinbrenner.

While Brenner’s death in the Stranger Things season 1 finale seemed final, as we mentioned, the character returned in season 4, only to be annihilated again. However, as previous seasons have shown, death is not a permanent condition in Stranger Things. Characters like Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery), who died in season 3, returned in season 4 as a vision. Likewise, Vecna is a “reborn” Henry Creel, and Jim Hopper (David Harbour), who we thought died in season 3, reappeared in Russia in season 4. Bob Newby (Sean Astin) also continues to appear in Joyce's memories after his death in Stranger Things 2.

With these recurring "resurrections," Modine's final hints, and the fact that the Upside Down is apparently no longer the only alternate dimension, Brenner's return in Stranger Things 5 may not be as surprising as it seems. His relationship with Eleven evolved in season 4, with a partial reconciliation, which certainly leaves room for more developments. Now, fans are eagerly waiting to see how Brenner will return and what role he will play in the next chapter. And, with any luck, Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) may also defy death to give us one final, iconic goodbye.
