Prison Break, one of the most beloved series by the public, is ready to return with a new chapter, which promises to expand its narrative universe! As reported by Deadline, after years of rumors, a pilot episode has been officially ordered by Hulu. The project, which marks a new phase for the iconic show, was developed by Elgin James, the co-creator of Mayans M.C. and The Outlaws, and produced by 20th Television.
Although the details of the plot are being kept strictly secret, it has already been confirmed that it will be a total reboot: an autonomous story, always set within the Prison Break universe, but which will not involve the main protagonists of the original series, Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell). James, who will also executive produce the project through his Sierra Drive production company, will work closely with the original series executive producers, including Dawn Olmstead, Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz.
News of the pilot comes a year after Hulu announced it was preparing a new installment of the series, this time with James at the helm. In July, Adelstein said work on the series was progressing well, with the first episode’s script being well received. The reboot has also received a significant boost from the return of Prison Break to Netflix in July 2024. The original series, which had been on hiatus from the service for two years, has seen a surge in viewership, becoming the most-watched show in the United States in August. In just 10 months of 2024, it has amassed nearly 200 million hours of streaming, maintaining a strong position in the streaming charts on both Netflix and Hulu.
For Elgin James, this project represents a return to a high-profile stage, following the success of Mayans M.C., which ended its run in 2023, and The Outlaws, which concluded its third season in early 2024. He also wrote, directed, and scored the film Little Birds, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and also wrote Lowriders (2017). While we wait for further details, the Prison Break project under the direction of Elgin James promises to bring a new energy to the series, while remaining faithful to the universe that has enthralled millions of fans around the world.
