Currently, the DC Universe is in a somewhat complicated situation. With James Gunn, who worked on the film The Suicide Squad: The Ultimate Villain (2021) and the TV drama The Peacemaker (2022-), at the helm, it is unclear what is canon and what is not. The new DC Universe kicked off with the animated series Creature Commandos. Gunn has now admitted that The Suicide Squad and season 1 of The Peacemaker will be treated as "light canon" in the new universe, except for one scene. At The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn laughed, "The Peacemaker will be carried over as is, except for the part where a certain group appears at the end."
The "certain group" refers to the Justice League, who appeared in a cameo at the end of the final episode, "Cow or Die." Aquaman, played by Jason Momoa, and Flash, played by Ezra Miller, appeared, while Superman and Wonder Woman appeared in silhouette. To revamp the universe, all the actors who played the Justice League members in the old system will be replaced. The role of Superman will be replaced by Henry Cavill with David Corenswet, who first appeared in Gunn's solo film "Superman". Other new faces are expected to be revealed little by little from now on. Gunn also stated that "they don't exist (in the new universe) yet."
But why did it become so complicated? It was because, at the time of the production of "Peacemaker" season 1, it had not yet been decided that Gunn would be in charge of the new DC Universe. Following the success of that series, Warner approached Gunn about producing a new series. After that, after Gunn finished writing all the scripts for "Creature Commandos", he was offered the position of president of DC Studios. In other words, having the Justice League make a cameo appearance in "Peacemaker" was a simple joke, but for Gunn, it would be different if he were in charge of the universe. At the time of distribution, Gunn shared the following behind-the-scenes story of Momoa and Miller's appearance.
"I talked to Jason before filming. What if (Peacemaker) said, 'Aquaman is always doing it with fish.' I was worried he would get angry, but he laughed and was on board from the beginning. I had heard from a mutual friend that Ezra liked my movies, so when I asked him, he was happy to accept. In fact, Ezra's scene was filmed during the filming of "Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3." So, what kind of relationship will the new DC Universe and the old Universe works have in the future? Gunn has a clear rule about this. "If there is a reference in the new universe work (even if it was an event from the old system), it happened (as canon). That's how we're working on it."
The DC animation "Creature Commandos" is currently available exclusively on U-NEXT.
