Netflix's new series, Kings of Tupelo: A Southern Crime Saga, has won over viewers with a story so absurd that it seems invented, but which is instead completely real. Viewers were stunned by the story of Paul Curtis, an Elvis Presley impersonator wrongly accused of trying to poison former President Barack Obama. Many fans call it "crazier than Tiger King", consecrating it as one of the best documentaries ever produced by the platform. The series, composed of three episodes, tells the ordeal of Paul Curtis, known in his hometown of Tupelo, Mississippi, for his Elvis Presley tribute duo with his brother Jack.
His life was turned upside down in 2013 when he was arrested on charges of sending letters poisoned with ricin to Obama and two other US officials. Ricin, a deadly substance derived from castor beans, causes devastating symptoms and death within days. But what makes this story even more incredible is the motive behind the accusation: In 1999, Curtis discovered illegal organ trafficking while working in a morgue and began a crusade to stop it, becoming an activist on social media and proposing a law to ban the sale of organs in Mississippi.
This made him a perfect target, and his fight against the system became the pretext to frame him in a conspiracy that destroyed his life. As the docuseries reveals, his innocence was eventually proven and the real culprit exposed, but not without leaving deep scars. Since its debut on December 11, Kings of Tupelo has generated a deluge of enthusiastic comments on social media. One user wrote: “Just finished watching Kings of Tupelo! 10/10… once again, Netflix has given us a masterpiece.”
Another said: “If this isn’t the craziest, funniest, most absurd documentary I’ve ever seen, I don’t know what is. Five stars!” Many viewers are comparing it directly to Tiger King: “Kings of Tupelo is absolutely the craziest thing I’ve ever watched on Netflix. It’s way more outlandish than Tiger King and that’s saying something.” Another fan added: “It’s the new Tiger King.” With Kings of Tupelo: A Southern Crime Drama, Netflix is once again proving its ability to turn true stories into compelling and memorable narratives. The series is already streaming and is quickly becoming the new true crime phenomenon. Can it dethrone Tiger King as the craziest documentary ever?
