The series will end in 2028 with the fourth season. But the finale could be revealed much earlier...

With the current production rate of the episodes, and given the network's choice to maintain a two-year gap between one season and the next, it is reasonable not to expect the finale of House of the Dragon before 2028. We will therefore have to arm ourselves with patience, before finally finding out how the war between Rhaenyra Targaryen's Blacks and Alicent Hightower's Greens will end. Or not? In fact, fans had not taken into account a small problem: the next spin-off of the franchise, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, is placed temporally precisely between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. And, with the release scheduled for 2025, the risk that it will reveal the ending of the story is really very high.
Let's be clear, the novels by George R.R. Martin that inspired the three TV series have been around for many years, so technically the conclusion is known. Furthermore, the original Game of Thrones series already tells the epilogue of the Targaryens from two hundred years earlier. We know, for example, that the Dance of the Dragons forever compromised their power over Westeros and that, at least until the arrival of Daenerys, the dragons were extinct. Joffrey Baratheon, moreover, directly "spoils" the fate of Rhaenyra in a conversation with his future bride Margaery Tyrell, even if it is a short and easily forgettable scene.
WARNING: Spoilers for House of the Dragon!
However, in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, it will be practically impossible to avoid the issue, considering that the civil war of the Targaryen family constitutes the real background of the story. The spin-off, in fact, tells the adventures of two unlikely heroes: the naive but courageous knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg, who is none other than the future king Aegon V, of the Targaryen dynasty. In revealing the noble title of this character, the novel inevitably reveals the outcome of the conflict between Blacks and Greens. Excluding the first two Aegons, of whom we already know - Aegon the Conqueror and the son of Viserys and Alicent - Dunk and Egg talk about Aegon III, defining him as "a man who was afraid of dragons, because he had seen his uncle's dragon eat his mother alive".
This is none other than Rhaenyra, while the uncle in question is Aegon II, who finally manages to regain the throne by killing his half-sister in this brutal manner. Of course, the spin-off could choose to omit these details so as not to spoil the finale of House of the Dragon, which will end with the fourth season. However, the history of the Targaryen family is central to the growth path of the little protagonist, who is determined to be the cause of the return of the dragons to Westeros and to restore luster to his dynasty.
