Despite having arrived on the small screen almost two decades ago, Dexter, the beloved character played by Michael C. Hall, has always remained in the hearts of fans, and, thanks to the transition of the series to streaming platforms, is managing to conquer a new generation of audiences. In short, the appreciation for the character shows no signs of diminishing, as evidenced by the creation of the revival New Blood in 2021, the prequel series Original Sin, and the upcoming and already highly anticipated Resurrection.
However, one question continues to torment fans. As they will remember, the ten-episode revival miniseries Dexter: New Blood had set itself the goal of giving the character a decidedly definitive ending. At the end of the show, Dexter Morgan finds his end at the hands of his son. Dexter accepts the fact that he has done more harm than good to those around him, ruining the lives of everyone he cares about. With this thought in mind, he allows his son to kill him once and for all, since he can no longer continue his activity while refusing to spend the rest of his days in prison or be sentenced to death. However, we know that the character, despite being shot in the chest, will return again in Dexter: Resurrection, which will debut in June 2025.
So how is it possible that he survived the ending of New Blood? The dilemma seems to have surprisingly found an answer in the prequel show, Original Sin, available for streaming on Paramount +. This seems to be directly connected to the ending of New Blood. In Dexter: Original Sin we see a policewoman, probably Angela, Dexter's ex-girlfriend, busy taking the unconscious latter to the emergency room. Surrounded by doctors who try to save him with a defibrillator, Dexter begins to show signs of life again and begins an internal monologue, letting go of a joke about resurrection. The character therefore seems to have been saved, even if he is in a sort of coma.
It is very likely that during Original Sin – and perhaps also in the next Resurrection – new details will emerge on the circumstances that allowed Dexter to be saved. In a previous interview, however, it was Michael C. Hall himself who gave a clue, explaining how the low temperatures of Iron Lake could help keep him alive. Probably the cold and snow have therefore slowed down the blood loss, allowing Dexter to still have a chance to fight for his life with the help of some doctors.
