His return was certainly highly anticipated... and finally (maybe) we're here!

Criminal Minds fans hold on tight: the return of a character we've lost track of for a few years may not be that far away! Interviewed in Italy, on the occasion of the awarding of the Premio Strega Ragazzi e Ragazze to his novel Rumple Buttercup, the actor Matthew Gray Gubler anticipated in a few words his return to the popular detective series, where he hadn't appeared since the fifteenth season, which aired in 2020. The star is the historic face of Dr.
Spencer Reid, a young genius expert in many disciplines quickly became a fan favorite, especially starting from the third and fourth seasons, when he gradually began to acquire more and more space, with many storylines revolving around him. However, due to previous work commitments, the actor has chosen not to return for the sixteenth season, which is also the first of the revival of Criminal Minds: Evolution. Here, in fact, it is mentioned that the character has taken a sabbatical and that no one knows if he will return to the BAU. The door, however, has always remained open, as confirmed by showrunner Erica Messer last summer:
«We love Matthew and he will always be part of our family. It would be nice to have the opportunity to have his character reappear. He would like it too, but so far we have not managed it. I cannot anticipate anything about the third season of Evolution, but so far we have not managed it… and not for lack of trying». Now, however, it seems that finally, something is moving. In the interview with ANSA, in fact, Gubler declared that he had «shot a new episode of Criminal Minds», citing it together with other future projects such as a Halloween film and comedy shows in American theaters.
How his statement should be interpreted, however, remains to be seen. Fans are obviously hoping for a big return of the character, which for now could only happen in a cameo in a single episode, given that Gubler will soon be busy on the set of the series Einstein, in which he will play the brilliant great-grandson of the famous physicist. Another option, although a little sadder for those who were waiting to see him again, is that he shot a new episode as director, considering that he has been on the other side of the camera for a long time now, also directing 12 episodes of the original series of Criminal Minds.
