Moana and Maui remain the masters of the Italian box office and aim to enter the Top 3 of the year

With a very wide margin, Moana 2 is still the best-grossing film of this last weekend at the Italian box office. In its second weekend in Italian theaters, the animated film by Disney has collected another 4 million euros (with a drop of -44%), bringing the total to a whopping 13,402,815 euros.
At this point, Moana 2 is already the fourth-best result in Italy for 2024 after Inside Out 2 (46.5 million euros), Deadpool & Wolverine (18 million), and Despicable Me 4 (17.7 million). The sequel starring the navigator Vaiana, also thanks to the upcoming Christmas holidays that will allow it a very long tail, is destined to grow a lot more and it will likely close in 2024 surpassing both Deadpool & Wolverine and Despicable Me 4. Moana 2 is now very close to reaching the result of the first film which, distributed in Italy at Christmas (Thursday 22 December) in 2016, closed with a total of 14.4 million euros.
Behind Moana 2, the second best takings of the weekend of 5-8 December was that of The Room Next Door (Warner): the first English-language film by the master of Spanish cinema Pedro Almodovar debuted in our theaters, after the passage to the Venice Film Festival, with 747,581 euros. Almodóvar returns to the big screen in Italy three years after Madres Paralelas, another film presented in competition at the Film Festival and which grossed 2.5 million euros at the box office.
Closing the podium is Napoli-New York (01): the new film by Gabriele Salvatores is holding up really well and, in its third weekend in theaters, it records a drop of only 26% and collecting another 720,693 euros reaching a total of 3,174,580 euros. Nice numbers for the Italian director. And speaking of Italian cinema, it should be noted that the successful run of The Boy with Pink Pants (Eagle) continues, reaching 7,809,445 becoming the Italian film with the highest-grossing result of 2024. It should be noted that Gladiator 2 has broken down the 9 million euro barrier and Wicked that of 3 million.
In addition to The Room Next Door, the other new releases that managed to earn a place in the Top 10 are the musical event film Francesco Guccini – Between the Via Emilia and the West (Nexo) with 311,276 euros and Creature (Medusa) with Marco D’Amore in the role of a street educator in Naples with 126,113 euros. Overall, the weekend of December 5-8 was worth 8,898,470 euros for 1,204,949 admissions. Numbers were down 32% compared to the previous weekend, but up 15.24% compared to the same weekend in 2023 when the best box office takings were those of There’s Still Tomorrow (1.5 million euros), Take Flight (1.2 million), and Napoleon (1.1 million).
