Wicked is officially in our theaters and the first audience and critics' reactions seem all bewitched by the musical with the great Cynthia Erivo in the role of Elphaba and Ariana Grande in that of Glinda. For the Pop Star, this is her debut on the big screen not only as a singer but as a film actress, and her performance was so dazzling that for many critics, both have already booked their nominations for the Golden Globes and Oscars in their respective categories. Today, however, we discover another rather curious fact. During the study and preparation of the character of Galinda/Glinda, the future Good Witch of the South, both Ariana Grande and the original interpreter of the Broadway musical, Kristin Chenoweth, thought the exact same thing. And now, what was technically just a fan theory could even officially enter the Wicked canon.
Ariana Grande's theory concerns the possible romantic subtext in the friendship that develops between Elphaba and Glinda, two figures apparently at opposite ends of the spectrum: the first marginalized, teased, and bullied for her green skin and the supposed strangeness of her character, the second beautiful, blonde, popular, in fact, the most popular at the University of the Kingdom of Oz. Ever since Wicked debuted on Broadway in 2003, ready to establish itself as one of the most beloved musicals of all time, many fans have begun to wonder if the two were just best friends or something more, so much so that they have been nicknamed the Gelphies. If we were to look at the novel that inspired the musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, the answer is very clear.
In the pages of Gregory Maguire's The Witch - Chronicles from the Kingdom of Oz in revolt, in fact, there is a real kiss and the sentimental tension between the two is explicitly described. In the play, however, their relationship is shown as purely platonic. And what about the film? Ariana Grande in a video interview with Gay Times gave her answer: «Glinda might be in the closet». Which translated into our language does not literally mean hiding in the closet. The phrase is commonly used in slang to indicate any homosexual person who has not come out. And to this belief regarding Glinda's sexual orientation Ariana Grande added: «The world of Oz is the celebration of everything unique, everyone is beautiful. And then in the Emerald City every day is Pride day!».
Immediately after, Cinthya Erivo then specified that for her too, whatever the nature of their relationship, whether sexual or not, it is still «true love, an indestructible love relationship». But it was the theory stated by Ariana Grande that immediately went viral on the web, and the response also arrived promptly, confirming and supporting her words from the actress who first brought the character of Glinda to success. When E! News reposted Ariana Grande's phrase on Instagram, Kristin Chenoweth commented without hesitation: "I thought the same thing a long time ago".
