Smallville, 14 Years Later, This Character's Characterization Still Infuriates Fans

The Treatment Reserved for This Name Has, Unfortunately, Hindered the Development of Other Storylines

Smallville, the popular show that explores Clark Kent's youth, is praised for its ability to combine drama and superheroism. However, the treatment the series has reserved for some characters, particularly Lana Lang, continues to spark discussion among fans. Despite being a central figure in Clark's life, especially in the early seasons, she has often been criticized for her superficial characterization and for the way her presence has hindered the development of other storylines, particularly that of Clark and Lois Lane's relationship. In the Silver Age comics, Lana Lang is introduced as a young Clark Kent's schoolmate and first love interest in Smallville. 

Although she represents an important figure in his life, their relationship is not destined to last, as Clark's future is tied to Lois Lane. This love triangle is often portrayed in the comics as a growth spurt for Superman, with Lana, despite her affection for Clark, giving Lois the space she deserves. In Smallville, Clark and Lana's relationship dominates the early seasons. From the beginning, Clark is in love with Lana, but their relationship is complicated by Clark's secrets, his insecurities, and tragic events such as the death of Lana's parents in the meteor shower that brings Clark to Earth. 

However, the constant push and pull between the two becomes frustrating for fans, culminating in a volatile relationship marked by misunderstandings and conflict. Throughout the series, Lana marries Lex Luthor, but the marriage quickly ends when she discovers Lex's manipulations, including a false pregnancy. Despite a brief reunion with Clark in season seven, the bond between the two is severed permanently when Lana absorbs kryptonite into her body, making it impossible for Clark to be close to her. 

This event, while poetic in that it harks back to its beginning, leaves many fans dissatisfied with the way Lana is removed from the story. As mentioned, one of the main problems with Lana in Smallville is her characterization. While she has the potential to be a complex character, she is often reduced to a love interest or “damsel in distress” role. Her reaction to Clark’s discovery of his powers, perceived by many as overly negative, and her return in the final seasons, which interrupts the budding romance between Clark and Lois, have also caused further dissatisfaction.

The handling of Lana’s character has been seen as representative of a larger problem with the series: excessively drawn-out storylines and premature introduction of elements of the Superman universe, such as Doomsday, without Clark being the mature superhero he should have been dealing with them. Despite the criticism, Lana Lang remains a significant character in the Smallville story. Fans recognize some moments of depth, such as when she confronts Lex and the trauma of their marriage. However, her inability to evolve into a more independent character and her constant romantic overtones have definitely limited her impact.
