From when he was a child searching for the seven dragon balls to his latest transformations such as Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue, Goku has been through a lot, but there is no doubt that in the eyes of fans, he is always the strongest hero in the Dragon Ball universe. And it was the same, apparently, for the creator, the late mangaka Akira Toriyama. In an interview given at the end of Dragon Ball Z, after the defeat of Kid Buu, the author had in fact stated that «Goku will always be the purest of all and the strongest in the universe». Despite the words of the famous cartoonist, however, the debate on the most powerful fighter in this narrative world has never ended:

there are those who, for example, claim that the eternal rival Vegeta gives him a hard time. In contrast, others claim that the strongest is Gohan (at a certain point, in fact, Toriyama toyed with the idea of creating a real passing of the baton, definitively killing Goku and making his son the new protagonist). However, it seems that, after years, even the series has denied the creator's initial wishes. In Dragon Ball Super, in fact, several new characters have been introduced with which Toriyama has rectified himself, starting with Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7, and his master and assistant Whis.

Being the most feared of the Gods of Destruction, Beerus is endowed with such immense power that he even puts Goku Super Saiyan God in difficulty. In fact, the god manages to defeat the protagonist, and in fact, Whis even claims that he was only using 70% of his potential. Although the two feel respect for each other, Goku is eventually forced to surrender and admit his inferiority. Interviewed together with the designer Toyotaro after the debut of the Super saga, the author also officially confirmed the invincibility of the God of Destruction, stating: «At the moment, I have no plans to have Goku and Vegeta surpass Beerus and Whis».

Another character who has already denied Toriyama's statement is the Grand Advisor, one of Zeno and Future Zeno's assistants and the father of all the Angels. As stated by Whis himself, he is absolutely the most powerful fighter in the entire multiverse, above all the others, so much so that even the Gods of Destruction and Beerus himself fear him. In short, it seems that Akira Toriyama has revised his position by introducing several new characters with seemingly invincible power. However, despite his departure, the Dragon Ball Super manga is still ongoing: will Goku eventually manage to surpass even them?
