Production on Mickey 17, the highly anticipated new film from Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho, best known for Parasite, has officially resumed. Warner Bros. has announced that it is delaying the film's release, originally scheduled for January 31, 2025, to April 18, 2025. Mickey 17 will be released in IMAX theaters globally. The news comes one day after Lionsgate announced it was delaying the release of Antoine Fuqua's Michael Jackson biopic Michael from April 18 to October 3, 2025. The decision to reserve IMAX screens for Mickey 17 reflects the growing importance of premium large-format films, which increasingly contribute to box office revenue.
“When the April 18 date became available, we immediately secured the slot for Mickey 17. We are thrilled with this new date and are pleased to make the film accessible to audiences in IMAX,” a spokesperson for the studio said. The film stars Robert Pattinson in the title role and is based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton, published in 2022. In the book, Mickey 7 is an “expendable” space colonist: a mission member destined for risky tasks, whose life is restored in a new cloneable body each time he dies. Ashton also published a sequel called Antimatter Blues.
Bong Joon Ho will bring his unique style to the adaptation of the novel, with a cast that includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. The film is produced by Plan B Entertainment, along with Dooho Choi of Kate Street Picture Company and Bong himself through his company Offscreen, Inc. In a joint decision, New Line and Warner Bros. also announced that Companion will now be released on January 31, 2025, instead of the originally scheduled January 10, to ensure a wide international release on IMAX screens.
