It was supposed to be another great weekend at the cinema in the USA, but Venom: The Last Dance will be remembered as another disappointment of 2024 that certainly will not go down in history for its big numbers. According to BoxOfficePro estimates, Venom 3 debuted with a gross of 51 million dollars, well below the low end of the forecasts that emerged from Thursday night's previews.

The gross, data in hand, is the lowest of the trilogy (80.2 million for Venom, 90 million for Venom: The Wrath of Carnage), but also lower than other genre films such as Ant-Man (57.2 million) and The Incredible Hulk (55.4 million), The Flash (55 million) and Shazam! (53.5 million). That said, it should be considered that The Last Dance was made with a budget that is not excellent (we are talking about 90/100 million); therefore, a box office of this kind can not be considered a flop.

But let's get to the reasons for this significant drop in box office.

Venom: The Last Dance has received a series of "embarrassing" reviews (find our review here), which have significantly lowered the score on Rotten Tomatoes (36%), paired with the not-exceptional scores that came out of the CinemaScore (B-). Data of this kind, together with Sony's repeated creative choice regarding the detachment from the key figure of Spider-Man (remember that Sony has recreated its Marvel Universe around the characters of the Spider-Verse, without ever mentioning Spider-Man in its films), have provided bad word of mouth, and therefore a box office below analysts' estimates.

Fortunately, the franchise linked to the character of Venom has proven to have a hard core of its supporters in the international markets. Kelly Marcel's film debuted, in fact, with 124 million dollars internationally, for a "consistent" Worldwide total of 175 million. This is the third-highest international opening of 2024 behind Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.

Contrary to what happened to Carnage, China chose to distribute The Last Dance also in its theaters, and the result was 46 million dollars, of which 6 from IMAX theaters, the biggest debut of a comic book movie since Spider-Man: Far From Home, but also the biggest Hollywood opening of 2024. Among other international markets, we mention Mexico (7.3 million), South Korea (5.8 million), the United Kingdom (5.7 million), India (4.7 million), and Germany (4.1 million).

US Box Office, the other films in the ranking

The second position went to the horror film Smile 2 with a new collection of 9.4 million dollars and a total now of 40.71 million. The third place was collected, instead, by The Wild Robot with 6.5 million dollars over the weekend, and 111.36 million since its debut. With the same collection (in fourth position) was the debut film Conclave, while in fifth position went to the romantic drama We Live in Time (presented in Rome in recent days) with 4.84 million, for a total of 11.76 million.
