Dune: Prophecy, HBO's new series in the Dune universe, will explore a little more about the Bene Gesserit sisterhood and the creators of the series explained what time of the story the plot takes place.
"The series is about the origin of the Bene Gesserit, the sisters you saw in the films. It takes place 10,000 years before the film, but we are still in the distant future. We are 10,000 years away from this story, we are in the shadow of the Great Machine War", Alison Schapker told Collider. "Humans have defeated artificial intelligence, autonomous and thinking machines are banished and humanity begins to rebuild. Sometimes we joke that it is the Dark Ages of Dune. The great schools are emerging, and one of those great schools is the Sisterhood. So we will see them rise to power", she added.
Alison Schapker and Jordan Goldberg also spoke about the future of the series and the duo's plans.
"We have a plan, and they (HBO) are eager to hear it all," Schapker said. "We have several plans, separated by centuries. And I mean, we really do. It's not news that our show is about the Bene Gesserit, but when we call it the Brotherhood, it becomes kind of an organization, how do they become the Bene Gesserit? That's a journey that spans several seasons, and that's the story we want to tell," she added. "The actions of the Brotherhood are generational. They're playing a long game, so there's a lot of story to tell," Goldberg commented.
Dune: Prophecy is set 10,000 years before Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) came to power on the desert planet Arrakis, and follows two Harkonnen sisters, Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams), who are fighting for the history of humanity and inevitably work together to form the group known as the Bene Gesserit. Indira Varma (Game of Thrones) will play Empress Natalya and Mark Strong will play Emperor Javicco Corrino. Travis Fimmel (Vikings), legendary Indian actress Tabu, Jade Anouka, Chris Mason, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Faoileann Cunningham, Aoife Hinds, Chloe Lea, Jodhi May, Josh Heuston, Edward Davis, Jihae, Charithra Chandran (Bridgerton), Jessica Barden (The End of the F***ing World), Emma Canning and Yerin Ha round out the cast. The series has gone through several behind-the-scenes issues, including changes in directors and showrunners. Today, Alison Schapker takes over as showrunner. Anna Foerster (The Day After Tomorrow), John Cameron (Legion, Fargo), and Richard J. Lewis (Westworld) have been chosen to direct.
The series will be adapted from the novel "Sisterhood of Dune" by Brian Herbert, son of Frank Herbert, the original author of Dune.
In Dune: Parts One and Two, the Bene Gesserit are portrayed as a sinister group of powerful women who pull the strings of power behind a dark curtain, with the ability to use the Voice to influence others according to their will. They are trained from a young age and can control all functions of their body, in addition to enhancing their fighting skills and increasing their physiological perception of others. Dune: Prophecy premieres on November 17 on HBO and Max. Both parts of Dune are already available in the streaming catalog.
