For the epic first season, composer Bear McCreary has woven a musical score that brings together a full symphony orchestra, thundering percussion, and traditional folk instruments from Europe and North Africa, combined with solo voices and choirs in the iconic languages of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books. For this thrilling second season, McCreary has built on that foundation with new themes and colors, including a Bulgarian female choir and the gadulka instrument for the Rhûn region, a children’s choir for the bucolic town of Eregion, the Hardanger fiddle for the new character Estrid, and mournful whispers for the terrifying Barrow Wraiths.

After collaborating with the iconic Fiona Apple on the song “Where the Shadows Lie” in season one, Bear McCreary has continued the tradition by inviting two additional vocalists to join him on new songs for the second season soundtrack. Grammy-nominated artist Rufus Wainwright brings an introspective, thoughtful soul to his performance as Old Tom Bombadil. “The Last Ballad of Damrod,” a song about a ferocious hill troll, is brought to terrifying, screaming life by Jens Kidman, the unforgettable lead singer of the Grammy-nominated Swedish extreme metal band Meshuggah. In balancing these many eclectic musical influences, McCreary has never lost sight of Tolkien’s writings for inspiration.

“I am honored to continue this journey, bringing the events of Tolkien’s Second Age to life on screen,” said McCreary. Series stars Sophia Nomvete, Benjamin Walker, Rory Kinnear, and Daniel Weyman also lend their vocal talents to several songs on the soundtrack. Nomvete’s character of Dwarf Princess Disa is a solo voice singing to the mountain, while Walker, as an Elven king, sings a mournful tune in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Elvish tongue. Kinnear, who joins the show this season as the first live-action version of the fan-favorite character Tom Bombadil, and Weyman, as the mysterious Stranger, join forces to reprise “Old Tom Bombadil.”
