Former Scream franchise star Jenna Ortega recently discussed her thoughts on Melissa Barrera’s controversial firing from the upcoming film in the series. In her interview with Vanity Fair, the actress expressed her disappointment with Hollywood’s growing focus on “political correctness,” which she said may have played into the decision to cut Barrera from Scream 7. Ortega said that the entertainment industry tends to be overly “saccharine,” and that this tendency leads to a lack of authenticity and honesty, saying,
“The industry we work in is so saccharine. Everyone wants to be politically correct, but I feel like in the process of doing that, we lose a lot of our humanity and integrity because it lacks honesty.” Barrera was fired from Scream in November after her social media activity surrounding the conflict between Israel and Hamas sparked controversy. Ortega also revealed that the situation had a direct impact on her, leading her to pull out of the project due to alleged scheduling conflicts. Now, the actress hopes the controversy will spark a “better sense of conversation” and foster more constructive debate within the industry.
The change had significant repercussions for the Scream 7 project, which initially had a major storyline for Barrera’s character. With Barrera and Ortega out and director Christopher Landon stepping away, the film underwent rewrites. Neve Campbell, who did not appear in Scream VI due to a salary dispute, will return for the next installment, which is expected to explore a time jump and will feature her character Sidney Prescott at the center of the plot.
