The superhero's future is still up in the air, despite the huge success of Deadpool & Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds has spoken out about his future as Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the success of his latest film, Deadpool & Wolverine, which has revived Marvel Studios after a disastrous 2023 run. The 47-year-old plays Wade Wilson in the film, while Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine after his character was killed off in Logan (2017). It is on track to become the highest-grossing film of the year.
Critics have been divided on the film, with reviews ranging from calling it "boring and annoying" to proof that the Marvel franchise still has a lot left to offer. Directed by Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy, the film follows superheroes who reluctantly team up to defeat a threat to their universe. Ryan Reynolds has returned to play Deadpool after a six-year hiatus, following his first outing as the sarcastic superhero in 2016, followed by a sequel in 2018. However, the actor is unsure if he will ever return to the beloved character.
“I would say that Shawn and I have been pretty clear,” Reynolds told Collider. “Honestly, the biggest problem an artist working for the higher-ups in Hollywood can have is a studio saying, ‘What’s next?’ Or, ‘How can we do something else?’ But this movie was made as a complete experience. It wasn’t supposed to be a commercial for another movie. It wasn’t supposed to be anything like that. And I took great joy in making a movie like that. But honestly, right now, I have no idea if I’ll ever get into that Deadpool suit again. I hope so, but I don’t know. Now it’s time to hang it up for a while and see what happens next.”
