Among the pillars of Grey's Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey was one of the main ones with Ellen Pompeo herself. For 11 long seasons, the handsome neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd was one of the series's main attractions, but he risked not being so because the actor was not at all convinced by the role. Dempsey revealed that the creator of the series Shonda Rhimes (the same as another phenomenon of the small screen, Bridgerton) scared him and looked at him very seriously during the audition, giving him the feeling that he was not doing it well. Convinced that he would not get the role, the actor turned to another casting for a medical series.
We are talking about him, the iconic Dr. House, a role for which he would have met with strong opposition and which, in the end, would have been won by Hugh Laurie. When he least expected it, he received the call from Rhimes, and the role of Shepherd was his. Derek Shepherd in Grey's Anatomy not only became one of the most iconic characters of the series but was also a great help to its career. For a time he became one of the most handsome men in Hollywood, starring in romantic comedies such as Bridget Jones' Baby, Enchanted, and The Witnesses.
But his tragic farewell to the series was accompanied by controversy, according to which he contributed to a toxic environment on the set and that many of his colleagues did not feel comfortable with him. In a television appearance, co-star Ellen Pompeo seemed rather reluctant to talk about him and simply said that they had not spoken since. Years later, the series brought him back for season 17, for a brief appearance. The actor admitted that he was grateful for the opportunity to return and complete his character’s arc.
