The next film Deadpool & Wolverine has already aroused a lot of enthusiasm among fans, but one particular joke has caught everyone's attention. It is a moment in which Wesley Snipes, who returns to play the legendary Blade, utters the phrase: "There was only one Blade. There will always be only one Blade." Director Shawn Levy, in an interview with Variety, explained how this joke was born. It was already in the script and Snipes found it hilarious. Levy described how they tried different reactions from Deadpool to the joke, but in the end, they opted for an expression of amazement and breaking the fourth wall of Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds.
Deadpool & Wolverine, all the meanings of the iconic line
The line has multiple layers of meaning. On the one hand, it is a funny reference to the short-lived Blade TV series, which despite being tied to the original films, did not see Snipes reprise the lead role, lasting only 13 episodes. On the other, it is a dig at the troubled production of the new Blade film with Mahershala Ali, which saw numerous rewrites of the script and two directors leaving the project.
This moment in Deadpool & Wolverine has become one of the funniest and most significant of the film, especially for the perfect timing with which it is presented. It remains to be seen whether this will be the last time we see Snipes as Blade, but for now, fans can enjoy his return in this long-awaited crossover. Deadpool & Wolverine is directed by Shawn Levy and is set to hit theaters on July 26, 2024. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and of course, Wesley Snipes, the film promises to be a smash hit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
