The actor's casting as Doctor Doom took even the Avengers by surprise

Avengers: Doomsday will feature the return of Robert Downey Jr., the former Iron Man, this time as the villain Doctor Doom. The surprise, announced by Marvel last Saturday (27) at SDCC, caught even the original Avengers back. Jeremy Renner revealed that not even the cast knew the news.
“No! I had no idea. The son of a b***h didn't tell me anything,” Renner told US Weekly (via Variety). “We're good friends. We have the Avengers family chat group. The original six. He didn't say anything. I went online and started sending messages like, ‘What's going on? Have you been hiding this from us the whole time?’ It's exciting news. I'm very, very excited about it.”
Previously called The Kang Dynasty, Avengers 5 will now have a new title, Avengers Doomsday. It's a change that reflects the studio's effort to downplay Kang, the villain seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Loki, after its actor, Jonathan Majors, was found guilty of sexual assault and battery against an ex-girlfriend and, shortly thereafter, fired from the role. Majors would return to the role of the villain Kang the Conqueror, seen at the end of Loki and present in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Now, the story is being rewritten by Stephen McFeely and will see the return of directors Joe and Anthony Russo with a new focus: Doctor Doom, the original villain from the comics that will be adapted in this and the next film.
However, this wasn't the only change the film underwent. Jeff Loveness, screenwriter of Quantumania and initially responsible for Kang Dynasty, was replaced by Michael Waldron, original screenwriter of Avengers: Secret Wars. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has also left the project. McFeely is also rewriting Secret Wars, which will once again feature the Russo Brothers. Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are Marvel's grand conclusion to the Multiverse Saga that began with Phase 4 of the MCU. Initially planned for 2025, the films are now coming out in 2026 and May 2027, respectively.
Secret Wars will adapt one of the biggest stories in Marvel comics, a conflict between universes that could end up rebooting the MCU in theaters. It is speculated that the film could feature the return of up to 60 characters. Secret Wars will then arrive in May 2027.
