After a decade of anticipation and speculation, the popular Borderlands franchise will finally make its big-screen debut. The film, directed by Eli Roth, draws inspiration primarily from the first game in the series, taking audiences into the chaotic universe of Pandora. The plot follows the infamous outlaw Lilith, played by Cate Blanchett, who is tasked by Atlas, the most powerful man in the universe, to find her missing daughter on Pandora.

Joining Blanchett in the stellar cast of Borderlands is Kevin Hart as Roland, a former mercenary seeking redemption; Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, a young demolition worker; Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Tina’s protector; Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis, an eccentric scientist; and Jack Black as Claptrap, the fast-talking robot. The film also stars Gina Gershon as Mad Moxxi, Pandora's bartender, and Edgar RamÃrez as the new antagonist, Atlas.
The Borderlands film project has a long history. It began in 2015 with Leigh Whannell in talks to direct, but only gained momentum in 2020 when Eli Roth was officially attached to direct. Roth, known for his work on horror films like Hostel, co-wrote the screenplay with newcomer Joe Crombie. During reshoots, Roth was joined by Deadpool's Tim Miller. Ahead of San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Screen Rant sat down with Eli Roth and members of the Borderlands cast, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Edgar RamÃrez, and Florian Munteanu, to discuss the challenges and joys of adapting a beloved video game into a film.
Roth expressed his excitement about creating a new cinematic world, far from reality and filled with futuristic elements, drawing inspiration from films like The Fifth Element and Escape from New York. Jamie Lee Curtis shared her experience bringing the character of Tannis to life, a complex and deep role that she embraced in part thanks to conversations with Christie Pitchford, who provided her with a wealth of background on the Borderlands character. Curtis praised working with Cate Blanchett, calling it one of the main reasons she took on the role.
